Jeffrey Gedmin: Putin will Leave Russia Devastated
The President of Russia Vladimir Putin, despite his current strong position, will leave his country devastated. This is the opinion expressed by Jeffrey Gedmin, President of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (2007-2011), during the 11th Kyiv Security Forum organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation Open Ukraine.
“Although he is the leader of the country, he also has a kleptocrat, and even Russian patriots should be told that at the end of his reign he would leave his country devastated financially, intellectually, spiritually and morally,” Gedmin believes.
In his opinion, today, Putin is shaping and imposing his agenda on the others, in particular, for the reason that people in the West are disillusioned with traditional political parties and the media.
According to Dr.Gedmin, in order to impose this agenda, Russia uses numerous instruments, including fake news and misinformation.
At the same time, the expert is confident that in confronting Putin one should “play long” and use all the possible channels in order to respond to the misinformation truthfully.
The annual international event Kyiv Security Forum was launched by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation Open Ukraine in 2007 as a platform for high-level discussions on the current issues in Europe and the Black Sea region. The Forum aims at increasing security cooperation between the EU and the Black Sea region, raising awareness about regional developments among key regional players, promoting the role of independent and non-governmental actors in setting the security agenda in Europe.
The event is being held with the support of NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, the German Marshall Fund, The Victor Pinchuk Foundation, The Royal Institute of International Relations, Chatham House (UK), and The Regional Representative Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine.
