Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine

Ernst Wolfgang Reichel – German diplomat, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany to Kosovo (2011-2013). Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine (since 2016).

Born July 28, 1960 in Lagos, Nigeria. After high school, he studied law at the University of Bonn. In 1986 he defended his PhD thesis on the state of refuge "under international law".

Mr. Reichel works in the diplomatic service in Germany since 1988. In 1990 as the employee of the Consulate General of Germany in St. Petersburg and then – from 1992 to 1996 – as the consultant on Russia for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.

In 1999 – the employee of the Legal Department of the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York.

Since 2000 – Deputy Head of EU policy and institutional issues department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.

Since 2003 – Deputy Head of the Office of the NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

Since 2007 he was head of the Department for Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and the Eastern Partnership at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.

Since July 2011 – Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany to Kosovo.

Since July 2013 – Germany's special representative for South Eastern Europe, Turkey and the countries of the European Free Trade Association.

Since August 2016 – Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine.
