Strike on Iran: the beginning of dismantling the authoritarian axis?
28.02.26

Kyiv Security Forum Analytics

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale operation against Iran. Strikes were carried out on Tehran (including the area of the presidential palace and the National Security Council), as well as on Isfahan, Karaj and other centres of military and nuclear infrastructure.

The key issues are not limited to the nuclear programme. Reportedly, senior Iranian leadership may have been killed or injured. If this is confirmed, it will no longer be a question of ‘containment’ but of the potential collapse of the regime.

The reason for the operation was the de facto failure of negotiations: Tehran has refused to transfer highly enriched uranium abroad, accept permanent restrictions and dismantle its nuclear infrastructure.
Negotiations on the missile programme and support for proxy forces were also rejected. US President Donald Trump said that Iran had resumed its pursuit of nuclear weapons and called on the Iranian people to overthrow the regime after the operation was completed.

Iran responded with strikes on Israel and American bases in the region. The Persian Gulf found itself in a zone of direct military escalation. Europe called for restraint. Russia sided with Tehran.

Will this bring peace closer for Ukraine?

If the regime in Tehran weakens or falls, it will be a blow to the Russia-Iran-China axis. Iran is an important supplier of resources and technology for the Russian war. Its destabilisation means a weakening of the Kremlin and a reduction in its negotiating power.

Thus, a possible temporary rise in oil prices could give Russia a short-term financial boost. But strategically, the fall or deep weakening of the Iranian regime would mean the weakening of the entire authoritarian bloc.

Therefore, the decisive factor will not be the scale of the strikes, but the answer to one question: is a political breakdown beginning in Iran, and with it a strategic weakening of the anti-Western coalition?
