Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee (2021–2025) and a member of the Kyiv Security Forum Security Council, signed copies of his book “If You Want Peace, Prepare for War” for visitors at the 2026 Kyiv Security Forum.
‘If there is one thing we have learned over the past four years, it is that Ukraine is a remarkable example of immense societal resilience. As you are all aware, war is a challenge for society as a whole, not merely the armed forces. The book is largely about what we need to do better within our own societies to become stronger – to move from efficiency to effectiveness, to accept and take risks, to demonstrate leadership,” Bauer said during a briefing with journalists and guests on the sidelines of the Forum.
According to the Admiral, the most crucial task today is to reflect more on who “we are as a society, rather than focusing solely on ourselves.” In his view, “individualism has gone too far.” He highlighted that russia’s gravest error was the assumption that the war would end in a matter of days. Bauer expressed his profound admiration for the resilience of the Ukrainian people and for Ukraine itself, which remains a sovereign state despite prolonged russian aggression.
“In many respects, the Ukrainian army is stronger than the russian armed forces because the russians have no idea what they are fighting for. Ukrainian soldiers know exactly what they are fighting for,” he emphasised.
The book’s co-author, Eleonora Russell, expressed her gratitude to the “Nash Format” publishing house, particularly for its brilliant translation. She recalled that publishing house and online store were damaged during a russian strike on Kyiv on 4 July 2025.
Bauer also added that the Ukrainian edition is, in his view, the finest among all the versions published in various languages. To date, the book has been released in Dutch, English, German, and now Ukrainian.
“This is the only hardback edition so far. And notice that the inside is yellow, while the cover is blue,” Bauer added with a smile.
Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year’s Forum is taking place on 23-24 April.
