Protecting independent anti-corruption agencies is important for both Ukraine and Europe – Deputy Director of the Special Investigation Service of Lithuania
23.04.26

Anti-corruption agencies that depend on those in power transform the fight against corruption into a mere facade, postponing the anti-corruption crisis until the future. Elanas Jablonskas, Deputy Director of the Special Investigation Service of the Republic of Lithuania, made this statement during the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme "Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?"

"During a war, people defend not only their land, but also their country's institutions. This is important for Ukraine, and it is important for Europe," he said. He added that he knows of no other country whose people would take to the streets in protest if anti-corruption agencies were at risk of losing their independence.

"If an agency cannot investigate those in power, then it is not truly an anti-corruption agency. It is merely a facade. It is ineffective and will only postpone the anti-corruption crisis for the future," Jablonskas emphasized.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year it is held on April 23-24.
