Maintaining strong alliances and supporting Ukraine – for the US benefit, - Ambassador Pifer
08.05.25

It is to the benefit of Washington to maintain strong alliances and support Ukraine, as more than 60% of Americans believe that assistance to Ukrainians should be
continued or even increased.

These were the words of Amb. Steven Pifer, Non-resident Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution, Affiliate of the Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University, and US Ambassador to Ukraine
(1998-2000). He emphasized the above at the 17 th Annual Kyiv Security Forum “UA: UNITE AGAIN TO DEFEAT THE GLOBAL AGGRESSOR”, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation “Open Ukraine”.

“It is in America’s best interests to maintain strong alliances and support Ukraine. If Russia defeats Ukraine, whether on the battlefield or in negotiations, this multiplies the threat Russia poses to Europe and the United States,” Steven Pifer emphasized.

He expressed hope that the US President Donald Trump understands this. “But I
doubt this,” the Ambassador.

In his opinion, it makes sense to continue Washington’s involvement in Transatlantic relations. According to the diplomat, about 63% of Americans support Ukraine and believe that the assistance and support should be continued or even increased.

“There is support in Congress, but not in the White House. I hope I’m wrong here,”
the diplomat added.

The Kyiv Security Forum, founded by Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Open Ukraine” foundation, is the main platform of our state for discussing the problems of war and peace, national and world security.
