European countries must significantly increase their investment in "hard power," enhance their defense capabilities, and strive for greater strategic autonomy while also maintaining strong and constructive relations with the United States.
Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Ukraine, Neil Crompton, stated this during the Kyiv Security Forum Special Session on the Global Situation and the Prospects for Peace in Ukraine "12 Years of Russia's War Against Ukraine: What Comes Next?"
The diplomat stressed that, despite the change in political styles in Washington, the long-term relationship between Europe and the U.S. remains the foundation of security. At the same time, Europe itself must respond more quickly to the challenges russia has created since 2014. "The main lesson is that Europe needs to invest more in defence, become stronger, and take more responsibility for its own security while maintaining strategic relations with the United States," Neil Crompton said.
According to Crompton, many European capitals are already undergoing "epochal changes" in defence policy. Investments in defence have increased significantly, particularly in Germany and other EU countries. This is a direct consequence of putin's actions and the realisation that Ukraine's security is inextricably linked to that of Europe.
The British diplomat emphasises that the UK, together with France and other partners, is actively coordinating security guarantees for Ukraine, particularly within the Coalition of the Willing. This includes sanctions along with a long-term enhancement of Europe's military-industrial capabilities, modernization of nuclear deterrence, and development of conventional armed forces.
"What has happened has radically changed strategic thinking in the UK about restoring our nuclear deterrence capabilities and strengthening conventional forces," he said.
At the same time, Neil Crompton emphasises that any negotiation process is only possible if Ukraine is confident that russia will receive an immediate and powerful response if it attacks again. "You have the best army in Europe and the most combat experience. We are all learning from you. You have already changed NATO's approach to warfare," the diplomat said.
According to Crompton, partners are discussing the possibility of financing the rearmament and reequipment of Ukrainian forces and providing them with modern technology and weapons. He also indicated the importance of sending a political signal to the kremlin and the willingness of some European countries to consider stationing their forces on land, in the air, and at sea — particularly in the Black Sea region — with the support of the United States.
