Ukraine not only needs help, but also has something to share with Europe - Yevhen Hlibovytsky
08.05.25

The resilience of Ukrainian society is the result of centuries of catastrophes and crises, and now Ukraine can offer valuable experience to the West.

This was stated by the Director General of the Frontier Institute Yevhen Hlibovytsky during the 17th annual Kyiv Security Forum entitled "UA: LET'S UNITE AGAIN TO DEFEAT THE WORLD'S AGGRESSOR", organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation "Open Ukraine".

"Ukraine's resilience has been tempered for centuries: the Holodomor, World War II, repressions, Chernobyl, and now - the war with Russia. Each generation of Ukrainians has experienced its own catastrophe and formed its own culture of resilience," he noted.

Ukrainians, he said, have formed deep social ties among themselves, which have become the foundation for resistance during a full-scale war.

Could Ukrainians have become like this without this difficult history? Perhaps. But only on condition that society would have learned and been able to institutionalize these lessons,” Yevhen Hlibovytskyi noted.

The director of the Frontier Institute also drew attention to the change in Ukraine’s international status in the perception of partners. “Ukraine is no longer perceived only as someone who asks for help. It has become a party that can share its own decisions. This changes the very nature of our dialogue with the West,” the expert emphasized.

At the same time, he critically assessed the Western security model of recent decades, calling it a “phenomenon of excessive security,” paid for by the United States, not by European societies themselves. As a result, the basic values that underpinned the post-war order began to weaken in Europe.

"Institutions designed for peacetime have proven to be too slow. They are forced to choose between efficiency and fairness, but are unable to act in the face of new threats," he said.

The Kyiv Security Forum, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” foundation, is the main platform in Ukraine to discuss issues of war and peace, national and global security.
