Every individual finds their own way to cope with loss and rebuild a fulfilling life after war. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Inna Korolenko, a veteran and member of the Ukrainian national team at the 2025 Invictus Games, stated this at the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”
"I lost my entire unit and returned alone. I suppose everyone forges their own path. There are no recipes or rules here. The only thing that matters is having an inner drive for life and a love for life as a process. There were times when I didn’t want to live. And that's exactly when Invictus came along," the veteran recounts.
After the games ended and she was discharged from the army, she began a new phase of her life, gradually finding herself through creativity and sports.
One of the key stages of Inna Korolenko's recovery was the veterans’ theater, which helps process traumatic experiences and find inner strength.
"The veterans' theater has opened. It’s a place that helps us work through traumatic events, heal, and show others that it’s possible. Every performance changes not only the actors, but also the audience," she notes, inviting everyone to attend the performance of The Aeneid at the Molodyi Theater on May 10.
At the same time, Korolenko has discovered new avenues for growth: she has taken up archery and is currently preparing to represent Ukraine at international competitions. She is also working on a book that is already scheduled to be translated and published abroad.
The veteran admits that it is difficult for her to assess her own achievements, but people’s reactions help her understand whether she is moving in the right direction.
"I see progress through the people I meet. As soon as I started acting in theater productions, people took notice. As soon as I started writing the book, publishers came forward. It’s like a litmus test showing you’re on the right path,” she concluded.
