Ukrainian defenders who were seriously injured while fighting off Russian aggression can find meanings and principles to help them move forward. Veteran Maiia Moskvych, a member of the Ukrainian national team at the 2018 Invictus Games, stated this at the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”
The veteran highlighted three key principles that help her move forward after the experience.
"The first is the survival instinct. During my service, I learned a simple thing: to survive, you have to keep moving. If you stop, the risk of dying increases. Since returning, I have continued to live by this principle. No matter how hard it is, I understand that the responsibility for my recovery lies first and foremost with me," she said.
The veteran cites community as the second most important factor. She compares returning from war to stepping into a completely different world where everything has changed.
"When a soldier returns, it's as if they're entering a new reality. They themselves are different, and the world around them is different. It’s important to have a place where you’re welcomed and told, "We're glad you're back." For me, Invictus has become that community. The warmth, support, and acceptance there help you get back on your feet,” Moskvych said.
The veteran identifies the search for meaning as the third key element of recovery. According to her, realizing that one’s life was saved not by chance helps one move forward. In particular, through honoring the memory of comrades or by setting new life goals.
“People often say: there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But I wondered: where is the tunnel itself? And I realized: it’s inside each of us. When it’s dark, you have to look within yourself and search for that light. I’m looking for it, too. When I find it, I simply follow it. Very often, it leads me exactly where I’m supposed to be,” the soldier concluded.
