The international community must recognize the heroism of the Ukrainian operators at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Their professional actions prevented a major nuclear accident when the Russians seized the plant in spring 2022. Mariana Budjeryn, a senior researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Nuclear Security Policy, emphasized this point during the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which focused on the theme "Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?"
"We are all infinitely grateful to the liquidators and firefighters who tried to minimize the consequences of Chornobyl. I believe we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the Ukrainian nuclear plant operators who did everything possible to prevent a major accident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the spring of 2022," she said.
Budjeryn, who is currently working on a documentary investigating the events surrounding the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, noted that neither the plant's staff nor Enerhodar's residents could have imagined an attack on a civilian nuclear facility with six reactors.
"Not a single person I spoke to expected this to happen. They were convinced that it was unthinkable, given that the Zaporizhzhia NPP is part of the international safety regime. No sane person in the world would dare fire on a nuclear facility like this. And yet it happened,” she emphasized.
The researcher also expressed disappointment over the lack of an adequate international response to this unprecedented act of aggression. "There were hopes that the world would immediately rise up and declare this unacceptable. However, aside from general condemnation, there was virtually no large-scale international response," Budjeryn added.
She recalled her interview with former IAEA Director General Hans Blix, who led the agency during the Chornobyl disaster. According to Budjeryn, the lessons of the past should remind the world that nuclear safety is not a theoretical issue, but rather one that requires decisive action in real time.
Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event that was launched in 2007 by the Open Ukraine Foundation. This year it is held on April 23-24.
