AI on the battlefield: military calls on manufacturers to roll out mass production
05.12.25

0x0 (1).jpegSystems with artificial intelligence elements have proven effective in combat, but their full potential can only be realized through mass production and close cooperation between manufacturers and the military.

Andrii “Zozulia”, a pilot engineer in the R&D division of the 1st Corps “Azov” of the National Guard of Ukraine, stated this during the 11th Kyiv Youth Security Forum "GEN W²: CODING THE FUTURE".

The military spoke in particular about his experience using automatic targeting and detection systems based on artificial intelligence. According to him, such systems are already widely available on the Ukrainian and global markets and are highly effective when used correctly.

We are now actively using such automatic guidance systems. There are many of them, and they demonstrate a certain degree of effectiveness. However, for them to perform optimally on the battlefield, they must be used on a massive scale," he stressed.

According to Zozulia, there are still false expectations of such systems on the front lines. "Often, military personnel hope that the system will be a last resort and do everything for them. Manufacturers position their systems as ones that will solve all your problems. But the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Any tool is only good when it is used in the right hands and at the right moment."

The soldier also emphasized that artificial intelligence is expected to be most effective in detecting enemy assets. "I see great prospects for using AI in systems that detect aircraft and other enemy assets. These can include various neural networks and training models. The processes that people perform in their heads can be automated and applied to a trained model that can identify specific targets of interest to the commander or strike unit."

He noted that the Ukrainian phenomenon lies in the unique horizontal interaction between developers, the military, and combat units. "The developer, user, and battlefield are all connected. People with ideas come to units that can effectively implement their systems, receive feedback, and swiftly refine their solutions."

Open Ukraine is an international foundation established by Arseniy Yatsenyuk in July 2007. Its goal is to strengthen and develop Ukraine's authority in the world. The foundation organizes the Kyiv Security Forum every year. This leading international discussion platform focuses on issues of war and peace. The foundation also organizes the Kyiv Youth Security Forum to develop a new generation of Ukrainian leaders.
