Sevghil Mousayeva, editor-in-chief of “Ukrainian Truth” (UKrayinska Pravda) web-based media stresses that at the backdrop of a full-scale invasion and martial law in Ukraine, independent media should remain united.
She emphasized this idea at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.
“Even opposition MPs now understand that journalists engaging in investigations present the best possible form of opposition, as the Parliament must demonstrate its unity by casting votes and taking important decisions. A certain moratorium on internal discord should be in place. Journalists and mass media act as a certain equilibrating force overseeing authorities and their actions. And this is an important factor”, - said Sevghil Mousayeva.
At the same time, according to her, freedom of speech in Ukraine is under jeopardy. Moreover, there are signs that the situation might further deteriorate.
“Lately, I am repeatedly asked by diplomats and international partners about the situation with freedom of speech in Ukraine. These signals are rather terrifying. We are aware of censorship attempts aimed even at the public media agency Ukrinform. So, I think the situation is to worsen, - said the editor-in-chief.
“Without free media and without freedom of speech it is impossible to talk about European integration and democratic future for Ukraine. And I feel a major threat to all of these”, - Sevghil Mousayeva summed up.
The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
