Senator Gallego: Supporting Ukraine serves the United States' interests and weakens Russia’s military capabilities
23.04.26

Supporting Ukraine is a direct national interest of the United States. It is also a key element in reducing Russia’s military capabilities and its ability to wage war. U.S. Senator (Arizona) Ruben Gallego made this statement during the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”

"Supporting Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and freedom is in the national interest of the United States. It is in the interest of the United States to undermine Russia’s ability to wage war both on the Ukrainian front and around the world,” he said.

According to Gallego, Ukraine plays a key role in shaping Western countries' modern understanding of warfare. "What Ukraine is doing and has managed to do is something we should be extremely proud of because we are learning from Western and allied countries how to wage modern warfare."

The senator emphasized that one of the strategic challenges is the need to deprive Russia of the ability to wage war. "We must orient our defense strategy in a way that prevents Russia from maneuvering and realizing its full military potential," he said.

Gallego also emphasized the importance of alliances as a key strategic advantage for the United States. “We have one asymmetric capability that Russia and China do not have – our alliances,” he said.

He believes that it is precisely this network of allies who share common values and interests that strengthens the United States in global confrontations. At the same time, he expressed concern about U.S. domestic policy, particularly the instability of the Trump administration's foreign policy decisions.

"The problem with Donald Trump is that he can be both helpful and harmful, depending on his mood and the day. This makes him unpredictable and very dangerous,” Gallego stated.

Additionally, the Senator confirmed that bipartisan support for Ukraine remains strong in the United States. "We have a very robust coalition of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate who support Ukraine 100 percent."
He added that public support for Ukraine remains high in the United States, but domestic economic problems are influencing political sentiment.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year it is held on April 23-24.
