Russian presence at Ukraine's nuclear facilities is a threat to all of us – Chair of Energoatom's Supervisory Board
24.04.26

Russian influence over nuclear facilities in Ukraine is a serious danger and a global-scale threat that must be avoided by all possible means. Ukrainian power engineers need support, not sympathy.

Rumina Velshi, Chair of the Supervisory Board of NNEGC "Energoatom", CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (2018–2023), stated this at the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme "Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?"

"Power engineers in Ukraine are operating under conditions that are hard to imagine," she said, noting that power grids are under constant attack, and electricity supply chains are being disrupted.

According to her, this demonstrates the high level of professionalism of Ukrainian energy workers, as well as their resilience and endurance.

"Ukraine does not need sympathy, it needs support: sustained partnerships, financing, and know-how – the best practices so that Ukraine can benefit from them. It is also important that all of us and governments have the political courage to recognize and state that the russian hand at nuclear facilities in Ukraine is a very serious danger and a threat to each and every one of us, and this must be avoided by all possible means," she emphasized.

Velshi also expressed hope that international energy companies will study Ukraine's resilience in this area – how to ensure that not only nuclear facilities, but also personnel, are capable of withstanding such threats.

"I am very optimistic about the future of Energoatom. It is a company that possesses strategic assets and plays a very important role for Ukraine," she stressed.

According to the Chair of the NNEGC "Energoatom" Supervisory Board, when it comes to nuclear facilities, nuclear safety, economic development, and other factors, Ukraine has every incentive for transformation.

"And after this transformation, nuclear energy will play a very significant role," Velshi expressed confidence.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year it is held on April 23-24.
