Western countries should not only scale up sanctions against russia, but also closely monitor them to prevent russia circumventing sanctions regime.
This were ideas voiced by Baiba Braže, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy in 2020-23 at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.
“We must pay more attention to deterrence of russia. This means more sanctions and their implementation. To this purpose, we need to cooperate with our partners via US Treasury, the EU to identify the gaps employed by russia to import the necessary paraphernalia, and plugging them in real time,” – said Ambassador Braže.
Ambassador Braže also added that supporting Ukraine must take specific, concrete shapes in military, economic, financial, and diplomatic dimensions.
According to her, Latvia is currently supporting Ukraine at 1% of its GDP, and this support will step-up.
“We expect other allies also upscale their support to Ukraine. This includes not only big production contracts, but upsizing investment into defence,” – emphasized Ambassador Braže.
The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
