To justify his war, putin lied about the “genocide” in Donbas, - Ukraine’s Representative at the UN International Court of Justice
21.11.23

The fact that 32 countries joined Ukraine’s lawsuit against russia on distortion of the term “genocide” is unprecedented in the history of the UN International Court of Justice.

This was stated Anton Korynevych,  Ambassador-at-large at the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, Ukraine’s Agent at the UN International Court of Justice, at a special event of the Kyiv Security Forum, established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation “Open Ukraine”.

“We hope that soon enough there will be a jurisdiction stage decision of this dispute. We claim that russia slandered and played around with the concept of genocide, falsely accusing Ukraine of committing this terrible crime against its own people and using this as a pre-text for a full-scale invasion. It is important to prove that such slanderous manipulations violate Genocide Convention,” he explained.

“One individual, sitting in front of the TV set in Moscow, and telling the world that someone over there has been committing genocide for 8 years and hence that was the reasons why we will be waging war against them just would not do. This is a blatant violation of Genocide Convention. And 32 countries joining the case filed by Ukraine is an unprecedented act,” the diplomat added.

The Ambassador-at-large at the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine emphasized that genocide is the gravest of international crimes, and should entail individual criminal responsibility. Therefore, it is important for Ukraine to prove genocidal intent in crimes committed by russians in Ukraine.

“If we look back at what took place during the Holodomor and at what is happening right now, we will clearly see that the goal remains the same – it is important for them that we cease to exist,” Anton Korynevych emphasized.

“For Russia, any form of our national identity, our self-understanding, our roots – all is evil. This is what they openly said and continue to say: without us there is no empire. Their goal is to destroy us as a state, as a nation, as a separate national group,” the diplomat is convinced.

The Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation, is the major platform in this country to discuss problems and issues of war and peace, of national and global security.
