The war has changed and has very powerfully shifted specifically into the airspace - neutralizing a massive number of drones has become a new challenge. This was stated by Oleksandr Yarmak, company commander of the 412th Separate Brigade “NEMESIS” of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the AFU, during the special session "Holding the Sky: Lessons from Ukraine's Air Defense", organized in cooperation with the Snake Island Institute as part of the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum.
“The war has changed and has very powerfully shifted specifically into the aerial domain. With the emergence of Shaheds, we saw that it is extremely difficult to intercept a massive number of drones. We had days when there were up to 1,000 drones. We have now reached a point where we have neutralized about 70% of the Shahed threat, and by the end of the year, we project it will be 90-95%,” he said.
Yarmak advised European partners to utilize Ukraine’s experience and to build the appropriate infrastructure and systems.
“We are building a multi-layered air defense system. We are building it by allocating targets and forming echelons such that the closer we get to the border and the line of active combat, the more cost-effective means we use to intercept targets,” he said.
According to the serviceman, the number of Shaheds deployed by the Russian Federation as of early April 2026 has doubled compared to the previous year.
The Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 upon the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Open Ukraine” Foundation. This year, it is taking place on April 23-24.
