Negotiations with russia – is cheap talk, - Columbia University Professor
22.03.24

Currently, there is no background for negotiations with russia.

This was the statement made by Stephen Sestanovich, Cullom Davis Professor Emeritus for the International Diplomacy, Columbia University, Ambassador-at-Large and Special Adviser to the Secretary of State in 1997-2001 at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation “Open Ukraine”.

“I do not perceive any foundation for any agreement with russia now. All talks about negotiations are idle talk, - Ambassador emphasized.

“At the same time this does not mean that there is no room for diplomacy. Diplomacy can have a great deal of value among friends, - Steven Sestanovich added.

According to him, it is worthwhile, in particular, to slow the drift of China toward russia to limit the cooperation that the russians may get from the Chinese.

“This is yet another component of diplomatic efforts”, - he added.

The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
