Estonian Defence Minister: for decades, russia was getting ready for a grant war
21.03.24

EU countries must be more decisive and disburse more money to support Ukraine in its war with russia.

This was the idea of Hanno Pevkur, Minister of Defence of Estonia at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

He mentioned that Ukraine is successfully defending itself and disallows Russia to gain complete advantage.

“putin has gone haywire and he tries to advance no matter what the price”, - the Defence Minister believes.

“Why cannot we provide Ukraine with sufficient size and scope of weaponry? Consider just one factor: between 1999 and 2022, the EU member states increased their defence spendings by only 19,7%. At the same time, russia defence expenditures have gone up by 292% compared to previous years. This means that russia was getting ready for war all these years,” – he claimed.

“We understand that russia’ ultimate objective is not Ukraine, but the desire to demonstrate the West and NATO that we are feeble, whereas they are strong and can reinstate the Russian Empire. How would we react to that?, - asked Hanno Pevkur.

Mr. Pevkur also believes that the single security guarantee for a country is its NATO membership.

He informed the audience that Estonia continues to support Ukraine and issued a new military assistance kit containing 155 caliber munitions to reach Ukraine in a number of days’ time.

According to the Minister, Estonia is also cooperating with Denmark, with the latter sending dozens of thousands of munitions to Ukraine.

The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
