Supporting Ukraine will remain among top priorities in case Ursula Von Der Leyen is re-elected as the European Commission President.

This was the message by Klaus Welle, Academic Council Chairman, Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies, General Secretary of the European Parliament in 2009-22 at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

He reminded the audience that since the very start of the full-scale russian aggression, Europe immediately commenced its assistance to Ukraine. And this is all because of the persuasion and strength of two women – Ursula Von Der Leyen, European Commission President, and Roberta Metsola, European Parliament President.

The expert also emphasized that it was the European Commission President who invited the President of Ukraine to visit the European Parliament where he delivered his speech just one week after the start of the full-scale aggression.

“She was also the first president of a European institution to experience air raid attack while visiting Kyiv”, – Klaus Welle said.

Touching upon future elections to the European Parliament, he stressed the importance of extending the mandate of Ursula Von Der Leyen.

Mr. Welle is Certain that supporting Ukraine will be the centerpiece of her second term in office, and additional funds for defence and further development of the EU military and industrial potential will be disbursed.

“This is a long-term engagement, this is not an issue of months. russia will remain aggressive for long, and if we fail to upgrade our potential in Europe, we will be too weak to counter russia, - Klaus Welle summed up.

The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
