Catholic Solidarity Cures National Egoism – Head of the UGCC
24.04.26

Manifestations of xenophobia and even Ukrainophobia are signs of national egoism that can be cured by Catholic solidarity. His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, made this statement during the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”

"The darkness you speak of – the manifestations of xenophobia and Ukrainophobia – are nothing more than expressions of national egoism. To us here in Kyiv, these words sound like an unmasking of Russian militarism," he said.
Speaking about the Catholic spirit of solidarity, which serves as a counterweight to national egoism, Shevchuk cited specific examples of aid provided to Kyiv by Polish Catholics during the harsh winter.

"I would like to mention my good friend, the new Archbishop of Krakow, Grzegorz Ryś. In the midst of that harsh winter, he organized a massive campaign to save freezing Kyiv after receiving a single text message from me. In literally a week, he raised nearly two million euros and delivered powerful generators to Troieshchyna and Obolon," said Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

According to the Head of the UGCC, the example set by the Archbishop of Krakow “inspired other Catholics in Poland as well.”

“Regardless of the political winds blowing at the top, Catholic solidarity heals national selfishness… The prophetic voice of the Universal Church today is a light in the dark times of modern selfishness,” he concluded.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year it is held on April 23-24.
