Garry Kasparov: As long as the russian empire exists, the war will not end
23.04.26

Russia's war against Ukraine will continue until there is a regime change in the Kremlin and the final collapse of the Russian empire into several new state entities.

Garry Kasparov, the Chairman of the Renew Democracy Initiative, emphasized this point during the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which focused on the theme "Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?"

"As long as the russian empire exists, the war will not stop. Putin is war, and the entire Russian economy has now been put on a war footing. Regime change is only possible through Ukraine's absolute victory, and nothing else can destroy this imperial virus except the Ukrainian flag in Sevastopol," Kasparov stated.

According to him, the current world order established after World War II actually ceased to exist back in 2014 following Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea due to the lack of a decisive response from the West. Kasparov expressed confidence that 2026 will become a transitional year, the outcome of which will reveal the contours of a new security architecture and geopolitical cooperation.

"We are living in dark times, but Ukraine and Europe are already awakening. Thanks to the heroism of Ukrainians, Russian tanks are not crossing NATO borders. Now we must think about how to rebuild the world so that the eternal battle between freedom and tyranny ends in our favor," he added.

Kasparov also mentioned that as of April 2026, the Russian authorities are in despair due to a shortage of personnel for the army, as evidenced by massive payments for contract enlistment. However, only Russia's military defeat in Ukraine can trigger irreversible processes of transformation inside Russia.

"Nothing can stop this regime except Ukraine's absolute victory," emphasized the Chairman of the Renew Democracy Initiative, adding that only after that it will be possible to dismantle Putin's regime and form new state entities in place of the Russian Federation.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.
