"Invictus has become my beacon": veteran Semen Lahun on recovery, loss, and finding a new purpose through sports
23.04.26

Adaptive sports help veterans return to life and find new purpose after injury. Semen Lahun, a serviceman and member of the Ukrainian national team at the 2023 Invictus Games, stated this at the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum, which was held under the theme “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”

The veteran said that participating in the Invictus program was a turning point in his life, as it occurred when he was in a critical psychological state. The soldier lost his foot in combat and was deeply affected by the loss of his comrades.

"In my case, Invictus came into my life at the moment I was emotionally shattered by the loss of my comrades and my injury. I couldn’t walk properly and didn’t know what to do next. Invictus became a beacon for me, showing me the way and providing a roadmap. I defended the country on the front lines, and I continue to do so, but now in a different role, representing Ukraine on the international stage," says Lahun.

He emphasizes that participating in the project was crucial for both his physical and mental recovery. Over time, the veteran progressed from participant to coach.

"This was pivotal in my recovery, both physically and psychologically. I made new friends, but most importantly, I found meaning again. I started as a participant, then became an assistant coach, and now I work as a wheelchair basketball and rugby coach. For me, this is a new form of service that allows me to support other veterans and help them find themselves,” he notes.

The veteran also highlights the scale of the challenge Ukraine is facing: according to various estimates, the number of veterans could reach one million people. This is why adaptive sports are becoming an important tool for rehabilitation and social integration.

According to him, the Invictus program involves multidisciplinary teams of psychologists, coaches, and physical therapists. Their goal is not athletic performance, but creating a safe environment where veterans can recover, receive support, and find new life goals.
