I am a human rights lawyer and I'm documenting war crimes in this war which Russia has launched against Ukraine.While this war turns people into numbers, we are returning people their names. Because people are not numbers. Life of each person matters.All this hell which we now face in Ukraine is a result of total impunity which Russia enjoyed for decades, committing horrible crimes in Chechnya, Moldova, Georgia, Mali, Libya, Syria, other countries of the world. Russia has never been punished. Russia believes that they can do whatever they want.We must break the circle of impunity. We must demonstrate justice. If we want to prevent wars in the future, we have to punish the states and their leaders who start such wars in present. It's common sense. But in the whole history of humankind, we have only one such a precedent. It was the Nuremberg Trial, where Nazi war criminals were tried only after the Nazi regime had collapsed.But we are living in a new century. It means that justice shouldn't be dependent on how and when the war will end. We cannot wait. We must establish a special tribunal on aggression now and hold Putin, Lukashenko and top political leadership and high military command of the Russian state accountable. We have to do it not just for people in Ukraine.We have to do it in order to prevent a next Russian attack on the next nation.

The 8th of May is our Liberation Day. In 1945, we celebrated liberation on the 8th of May after five years of occupation. For 80 years, we have celebrated the 8th of May as our Liberation Day from occupation, and in 2011 we also included our veterans and started to call the 8th of May Liberation and Veterans Day.On this day, we honour the fighters from World War II and the freedom that Norway got after five years of occupation, but we also honour all the veterans who have been deployed on behalf of Norway to operations ever since 1945.On this 8th of May, it's been 80 years since Norway was liberated. We have been living in freedom, in our democracy, for 80 years. For Ukraine, the story is different.Ukraine has been occupied since 2014, and after the full-scale invasion from Russia in February 2022, Ukraine has been fighting for its liberation, and for its freedom, and for its democracy.Norway will continue to support Ukraine, both in the short term in the current fight, but also in the medium term to regain territory, and in the long term to support the rehabilitation and the build-up of a new Ukraine Defence Force. We will also support the reconstruction of Ukraine after fighting is stopped.I hope this day and this Security Forum will give new perspectives, but also hope and solutions for free and prosperous Ukraine once the Russian aggression is stopped.As we celebrate 80 years of liberation in Norway, I hope that one day we can also celebrate the liberation of Ukraine.I wish you all the best for the Security Forum! Ukraine’s victory in the war, capitulation of the Kremlin’s boss and his liability for all crimes committed are only possible through unity of all international forces and a clearly designed plan.This was the key message of Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Kyiv Security Forum Founder, Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014-16 at the unveiling of the 17 th Annual Forum “UA: UNITE AGAIN TO DEFEAT THE GLOBAL AGGRESSOR”, May 8 in Kyiv.“It was 80 years ago when the Nazi Germany was totally defeated, and Allies gained victory in the war. I believe the time will come when the Hitler of modern times, President Putin, capitulates. As well as all his inhuman ideology, all crimes committed by him and his state. With his genocidal war that he started against my country. The sole way we can attain victory is to unite again the way we did 80 years ago. And we shall be successful on this just road to reconstruction of the world order”, - he said.Arseniy Yatsenyuk also mentioned that appeasement policies always lead to rampant aggression.“I’d like to remind us that back in 1938 the whole free world was eager to sign pacts with Hitler. And to what result? Hitler started the Second World War. In 2014, after the modern Hitler illegally annexed Crimea and deployed his troops in Donetsk and Luhansk, the free world also willed to sign pacts with him. And to what result? In 2022 he started the massive aggression against Ukraine. So, no more appeasement policies. To attain peace, we need to demonstrate force”, - the Forum Founder stressed.He also doubted the effect of gaining peace solely through diplomacy and diplomatic channels.“I categorically disagree with this. I see no chance to arrive strike a peace deal with Russia solely through diplomatic channels. Diplomacy must be coupled with military might. This is the only language Putin understands”, - Arseniy Yatsenyuk argues.He firmly believes that to stop the war, a clear and comprehensive plan must be designed: “My address to the US Administration and to those willing to negotiate with Putin. Indeed, Putin wants to negotiate with you, he’s even ready to play golf with the US President. But he wills to play golf at his own hockey rink. So, what do we need? We need a comprehensive, strong plan to bring back and ascertain peace. We cannot attain peace through compromises. Compromises only whet this beast’s appetite. We have already compromised many things, and we paid dearly for this with our own lives and our blood. This is our common battle. We are extremely grateful to the EU states, to the NATO Allies, to the US for all their support of Ukraine. If that would not have been the case, we would not have stood strong to retaliate”.Arseniy Yatsenyuk also underlined the Ukraine’s role of remaining the real stronghold of European and global security.“We have demonstrated to the whole world that despite Russia being armed cap-a-pie and having such allies as China and other tyrants and dictators, despite Russia having nuclear armaments, we have strength, will and resilience to stand up and backlash the Russian military assault. We are wounded, but our will remains strong. We are tired, but not exhausted. And we remain certain that time will come when Ukraine and the whole free world prevail. And this is the core message and idea of this conference: unite again and prevail. These days, I participate in commemorative events to remind all what we gained 80 years ago. That was a heroic fight, we fought shoulder-to-shoulder, and everyone demonstrated their bravery and courage. Our predecessors fought to preserve our freedom and overcome fascism. That was a great victory, and we still enjoy the gains of those years.And here I’d like to pinpoint what is important – it is what Ukraine is now doing for us all. The fighting waged by your people is the embodiment of the very moral and intellectual strength and Intelligibility that we all admire. This fight that we witness gives rise to broad discussion across the whole world and primarily across Europe stressing that we should cherish, protect and maintain the freedoms gained 80 years ago. This is not about things past. This is our modern reality. And it is Ukraine that is at the forefront today, demonstrating us all the importance of safeguarding these freedoms and what happens when these freedoms are attacked, and what it means to fight for their preservation.And this brings me to the next issue. The UK will continue to support Ukraine in future. To support Ukraine in its current battle. Both the UK and France remain ready to undertake any opportunity to assure ceasefire to assist Ukraine to benefit from this opportunity, to sustain it and multiply it, to assist Ukraine in ascertaining its road to peace, well-being and maintaining its invaluable freedoms. And this, in turn, requires a durable support to Ukraine and its Armed Forces, so that the certainty in support remains, and you are well-braced to deter the aggressor and retaliate against.So, once again, I am terribly sorry for not being here with you today in person, and I’d like to emphasize the importance of this Forum, and the importance of the role Ukraine plays in galvanizing all the mentioned discussion. It is extremely important today, when we remember the freedoms attained 80 years ago. I was there when the first ever joint NATO-Ukraine organization opened its doors in Poland. The Joint Analysis Training and Education Centre will help us all learn the lessons from the war.&nbsp;NATO allies are continuing to step up for Ukraine. In the first three months of 2025, they have already pledged more than 20 billion euros in security assistance for Ukraine. Many allies, including through the efforts led by France and the United Kingdom, have shown that they are ready, willing and able to take more responsibility and to help secure peace when the time comes.Eighty years ago today, World War II ended in Europe. Expanding sanctions against Russia, European community unity, EU readiness to counter Russian threats, as well as extension of industrial defence cooperation among Ukraine and European partners have become the top discussion issues of Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Kyiv Security Forum Founder and Chairman, Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014-2016 and Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space.Their conversation took place at the 17 th Annual Kyiv Security Forum “UA: UNITE AGAIN TO DEFETA THE GLOBAL AGGRESSOR”, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.Speaking about unity, Arseniy Yatsenyuk argued that at least two heads of the EU member states governments or European countries plan participating in the Moscow Parade on May 9 at the backdrop of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.“These are Hungary and the Slovak Republic. Something is obviously terribly wrong there. Our Forum’s motto is “Unite Again”. Hence, the question, Commissioner, is whether Europe is indeed united? If there are two countries that can veto sanctions against Putin rollover, since we discuss expansion of sanctions, and these countries have their own say when it comes to Ukraine joining the EU. What is the vision of the European Commission?", - the KSF Founder enquired.The Commissioner responded by suggesting that in future Euro-community may face deeper problems still.“Issues relating to decision-making process in the EU necessitate consensus, in particular, defense matters or external policies. This is the way the EU Agreements are formulated. Nowadays, in-depth discussions take place in the EU. A conference on the EU future was held. One of the key messages and conclusions thereof was the proposal to drop the requirement of the complete and total consensus when taking decisions, and adopt them by simple majority. Those disagreeing may vote against. In any case, a democratic majority must be capable of adopting a decision”, - Andrius Kubilius believes.At the same time he pinpointed attention to “the current defence crisis that we have”.“It is quite possible that a governance crisis ensues prompting us to reach long- awaited necessary decisions”, - the Commissioner claimed.Andrius Kubilius also argued that the EU is fully cognizant of threats and challenges proving that before 2030 Russia will be ready to commit aggression against the European states.“Hence, we need to get ready through our own efforts and cooperation within NATO and the EU, and step up our defence capabilities.
