Yatsenyuk on Trump's speech in Davos: Trump considers the war in Ukraine to be a European issue, not an issue for the US
21.01.26

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump positioned the war in Ukraine as an EU issue, but the American administration must realise that ending the war is in the interests of their national security. This was stated by the Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum, Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014-2016, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, on Times Radio.

‘Trump made it clear that the war Russia is waging against Ukraine is not his business. He believes that it is a matter for the European Union,’ said the KSF Chairman.

According to him, there was nothing unexpected in Trump’s speech. ‘Even the fact that he made it clear that the US has no intention of invading Greenland is not news. Most Americans are strongly opposed to and reject the very idea of invading Greenland, which is effectively part of NATO,’ Yatsenyuk added.

At the same time, the Chairman of the KSF drew attention to the support for Ukraine among Americans, which could influence the midterm elections.

"There were thoughts in the White House about whether to turn away from Ukraine. But take a look at opinion polls: seven out of ten Americans support Ukraine. The US is preparing for the midterm elections. I won't say that this will be a decisive factor, but it will significantly affect the election results. On the one hand, he says, “This is not our business,” but on the other, he believes that his special envoy should go to Moscow and conclude some kind of agreement," the former prime minister emphasised.

According to the Chairman of the KSF, the Trump administration must realise its own interests in stopping the war. ‘And do everything possible – and they can do a lot and have a lot of influence – to force Russia to stop the war,’ Yatsenyuk stressed.

Separately, he commented on the information about a possible $800 billion investment in Ukraine, calling it unrealistic.

"First of all, we must stop the war and achieve either a lasting and fair truce or a peace agreement. Only then will we be able to develop various plans for prosperity. Right now, this seems like an impossible dream if Ukraine does not receive real security guarantees and if there is no willingness to put strong pressure on Russia to end the war," Yatsenyuk said.
