NATO Secretary General on Ukraine’s Accession to the Alliance: it is not about “if”, it is about “when”
21.03.24

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries have already delivered military assistance to Ukraine for billions of dollars and will continue to expand it.

This is what Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General emphasized in his special video address to the 16th annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

“Two years after the full scale aggression, your country remains free and independent. It is exactly what putin wished to take away from you – your sovereignty. And he failed. He underestimated your courage, your creativity and determination” – NATO Secretary General stressed.

Secretary General also emphasized that Ukraine has already inflicted heavy losses to the Russian forces, pushing back the russian Black Sea fleet and resuming the maritime corridor for grain and other commodities.

According to Mr.Stoltenberg, putin also underestimated the strength and unity of the NATO Alliance and its commitment to support of Ukraine.

“NATO members have delivered military support to Ukraine worth dozens of billions of dollars. And more is underway”, - he emphasized.

Secretary General also added that putin wanted to prevent Ukraine choosing its own path alienating the country from its Euro-Atlantic family.

“All he achieved was the direct opposite. Today, Ukraine has the EU country-candidate status. And you have approached NATO as close as never before”, - he said.

“We assist making your Armed Forces more compatible with NATO Allies while preparing for Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance. This is not about “if”, this is about “when”, - Jens Stoltenberg emphasized.

The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
