“Actions are the best way to honour those who suffered” – Grossi on the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster

Ukraine can rely on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will continue to make the most effective use of every day to maintain nuclear safety and security.

This was emphasised by Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, at the 18th annual Kyiv Security Forum “Darkness or Dawn: Is Light Ahead?”

“We mark the sombre 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. We remember the engineers and workers who took part in the recovery efforts, as well as the hundreds of thousands who lost their homes and were forced to leave their communities. I believe the best way to honour their sacrifice and suffering is through our actions,” Grossi said in a video address.

He noted that on 9 May 1986, less than two weeks after the accident, the IAEA became the first international organisation to inspect the disaster site. He emphasised that the Chornobyl accident changed history, and this was no exaggeration. This catastrophe altered the course of nuclear energy development, Grossi added. According to him, over the past 40 years, the IAEA has worked closely with Ukrainian partners to provide support and ensure ensure the dissemination of truthful information.

“The Chornobyl accident taught us that the use of nuclear energy without proper safety standards, transparency, and international cooperation carries risks that recognise no borders,” the IAEA Director said.

He emphasised that in 2022, the world faced a new danger with the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, raising the risk of a nuclear incident with radiological consequences.

Today, Ukrainian specialists and IAEA teams are working at all nuclear power plants in Ukraine, maintaining safety and keeping the international community informed about developments on the ground, he noted.

“The question is: darkness or dawn? I say: dawn. After every night comes the dawn. We wake up, do our work, and make the most of every day…I promise that the IAEA will continue to make the most effective use of every single day. We will continue to support Ukraine and nuclear safety. You can count on it,” he assured.

Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) is an annual international event launched in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. This year’s Forum is taking place on 23-24 April.
