On February 14, the Munich Security Conference (MSC) will host an event entitled “Energy Warfare: How to Unplug Tyranny”. This is the first joint event of the Kyiv Security Forum and MSC, the two leading security platforms.
The event will take place in a roundtable format and bring together about 20 participants, including:
- Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum, Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014-2016;
- DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko;
- Former chief executive officer of Naftogaz Andriy Kobolev;
- Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine Heiko Thoms;
- Commander of U.S. Central Command in 2008–2010, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in 2011–2012, General David Petraeus;
- Former US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker;
First Vice-President of the European Commission in 2010-2014, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in 2009-2014, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
Russia has continued to systematically destroy Ukraine's energy infrastructure. How can Ukrainians survive until the heating season? How can the economy withstand blackouts? How does the West plan to help us? And most importantly, how can we get through next winter if the end of this one does not mean an end to attacks on power generation, heating and water supply facilities? We may therefore face a total blackout at the beginning of the next autumn-winter period. Is there a joint plan with Europe and the world to avoid the humanitarian crisis that Putin is counting on in order to undermine the resilience of Ukrainians and provoke internal conflicts? How is Europe preparing to protect its energy sector, given Ukraine's experience? And the key question: how can we stop feeding aggressive tyrannies by buying hydrocarbons from them? Participants in the discussion will address these and other issues.
The event will be held at the Ukrainian House in Munich, which is opening its doors for the first time directly at the MSC venue.
The event will start at 11:00.
The Kyiv Security Forum was founded in 2007 on the initiative of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Over the years, the KSF has established itself as the leading international discussion platform in Ukraine on issues of war and peace.
The Munich Security Conference is the most influential international forum for discussing global security and defence policy issues. Established in 1963 as a meeting of representatives of the defence ministries of NATO member states, it is held annually in Munich, Germany. Participants include more than 450 world leaders, including heads of state, ministers, heads of international organisations (UN, NATO, EU), as well as experts and business representatives.
The 62nd Munich Security Conference is taking place on 13-15 February.
