Former President of the European Council: the European Council Treats Ukraine as if it already is the EU member state
21.03.24

The European Union opened its doors for Ukraine’s membership ten years ago, and there is no turning back – Ukraine shall become the member of the European family of nations.

This was stated by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council in 2009-14 at the 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

“There are historic origins of this current war. I’d call them nostalgia about the Russian Empire of the past, the so-called golden era of fear, terrorism, and enslaving peoples. We should not return to this road”, - he said.

“russia does not understand, or does not want to understand, or fails to understand completely why Ukraine perceives itself a European state. russia has always treated Ukraine as its property, and wants to bring all back”, - Mr. Herman Van Rompuy added.

He also mentioned that the Baltic countries were once under the Soviet Union occupation as well, while now they are the EU member states.

“Why such issues need to be resolved differently than it was once the case with the Baltic states? They used to be part of the Soviet Union as well”, - stated the former President of the European Council.

“We all know that a wealthy, free and democratic Ukraine is the intolerable idea for the current rulers of Russia. We crossed that Rubicon some ten years ago, and there can be no return to the old. The EU is already treating Ukraine as a full-fledged EU member state”, - he added.

The 16th Annual Kyiv Security Forum is held March 21-22, 2024, to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine. This year Forum slogan is “Ukraine’s call to the World: Together We Prevail!”.
