Strategic awakening at the backdrop of real Russian threats so far fails to embrace all Europe. Hence, it is necessary to analyze the threats that exist within each and every European state.

This was the key message of Natalie Tocci, Director of the Instituto Affari Internazionale, Italy, at the 17 th Annual Kyiv Security Forum “UA: UNITE AGAIN TO DEFEAT THE GLOBAL AGGRESSOR”, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

“Strategic awakening … so far is not visible across the whole Europe. And this is obvious to all”, - Natalie Tocci said.

According to her, strategic awakening is clear understanding of what Russia is capable of and the fact that Russia is a real threat. “As one moves westward and southward, the awakening declines in its intensity. Some states fail to apprehend the jeopardy because of their geographical location”, - she explained.

Second, according to Natalie Tocci, Director of the Instituto Affari Internazionale, Italy, is the need to recognize “realistic possibility of America’s volte face”. “This is not just indifference, it is a real treason”, - Natalie Tocci explained.

According to her, strategic awakening also means understanding the fact that the USA “may choose the wrong side”. If this is the case, there will be no awakening. “Turncoats or foes may be found within Europe as well … we are aware of the extreme right factions supported by Russia”, - she explained.

Therefore, according to Natalie Tocci, it is worthwhile “to analyze the fragility inside Europe, and threats existing in our respective countries”.

Yet another component of our awakening, according to Director of the Instituto Affari Internazionale, is the understanding of the fact that European safety and security directly depends on Ukraine.

“So far, there is no tipping point number of Europeans fully cognizant of all four elements of critical awakening”, - she summed up.

The Kyiv Security Forum, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk's Open Ukraine Foundation, is the main platform in this country for discussing issues of war and peace, national and global security.
