After the World War II, reliance on the US in security issues was almost universal, though now Europe needs stand ready to defend itself, and learn doing this without the US.
This was the message shared by Marketa Gregorova, MEP (Czech Republic) at the 17th Annual Kyiv Security Forum entitled “UA: UNITE AGAIN TO DEFEAT THE GLOBAL AGGRESSOR”, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation “Open Ukraine”.
“They (the US - ed.) themselves are already violating Art. 5 (of the NATO Treaty), threatening Greenland… If they violate it, how can we expect them to protect us?”, Marketa Gregorova said, referring to US security component.
She noted that the issue of European security autonomy is not about mathematics. “It takes 5 years to replace American arsenals, 2 years for Russia to restore its potential. It seems as if we are starting from scratch. But no, we are not starting from scratch without America being there,” the MEP stressed.
According to her, after the World War II everyone seemed to rely on the US in security issues. “But this means that we (Europe) did nothing,” she added.
“We have joint procurement, joint military exercises. And we need combat readiness. “We haven’t done this without the Americans yet, but we have to do it now,” Marketa Gregorova expressed confidence.
The Kyiv Security Forum, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” foundation, is the main platform in Ukraine to discuss problems of war and peace, national and world security.
