Without fighting corruption, there will be no accession to the EU and NATO, - Director of the National Democratic Institute in Ukraine
05.09.23

Marcin Valecki, Director of the National Democratic Institute in Ukraine emphasizes that the development of democracy in Ukraine is an integral component to have in case the country wants to join the EU and NATO.

He stated this idea during a special event of the Kyiv Security Forum, founded by Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

“Recent polls prove that 94% of Ukrainians want Ukraine to be a functioning democracy. This is a huge increase. The second important factor is that Ukraine has the strongest civil society that I have seen in my life. I’m concerned about the issue of diversity of opinions in mass media, but you have an extremely strong civil society that exerts its soft but powerful influence on decision-makers,” Valecki said.

He added that 93% and 89% of Ukrainians support Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO, respectively, and public support in these issues is yet another important elements, because “there can be no membership in the transatlantic family without a powerful democracy.”

“It is all interconnected. Without development of democracy  there is no development on the accession path,” Marcin Valecki stressed.

“Fighting corruption is not just a prerequisite for foreign investment to the purpose of reconstruction of Ukraine. Fighting corruption is a prerequisite for membership in the EU and NATO. Without this, we can forget about accession,” he concluded.

The Kyiv Security Forum, established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Open Ukraine” Foundation, is the main platform in this country for discussing issues of war and peace, national and global security.
